Caring For Our Earth
Living and working in beautiful, bountiful Pennsylvania Dutch Country gives Plain & Fancy Custom Cabinetry special reason to care for the earth—and reason to follow state-of-the-art environmental protection practices in manufacturing our custom cabinetry.
KCMA Environmental Stewardship Program
To demonstrate our complete commitment to protecting the environment, Plain & Fancy is a certified participant in the Environmental Stewardship Program (ESP) of the Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association (KCMA).
The ESP program was established to recognize and encourage industry policies and practices that benefit both the natural environment and human society. To qualify for and maintain certification, Plain & Fancy is evaluated annually on compliance in the categories below:
Air Quality
P&F meets requirements for the reduction in emissions of hazardous air pollutants (HAPS). For example, we use PureBond plywood, which meets strict formaldehyde emission limits through the use of non-toxic adhesives.
Product Resource Management
As far as possible, we use recycled and sustainable products. Solid woods like Maple, Cherry, Walnut, Red Oak, and Pine are sourced from environmentally conscious vendors. We also offer low impact woods like Bamboo, and reconstituted veneers such as Wenge and Zebrawood.
Process Resource Management
While it is always a goal to minimize the creation of waste, we are committed to exploring every opportunity to recycle or use waste materials generated by our operations. Waste that cannot be eliminated, reduced, reused, recycled, or composted is disposed of through safe and responsible methods. Recycling programs are in place for cardboard, dunnage sheets, scrap wood, solvents, metals, batteries, computers, light bulbs, office paper, and ink cartridges. For example, saw dust is given to a local farmer for animal bedding.
Environmental Stewardship
Plain & Fancy is permitted by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and meets or exceeds all government requirements for air and water quality regulations. We are involved in programs like EPP and ESP that review and certify our environmental policies and practices. Our own waste assessment program assures compliance with environmental regulations and internal procedures from lumber handling to final packaging, and we continue to strive to make improvements in all aspects of manufacturing.
Community Relations
Plain & Fancy actively demonstrates community involvement and leadership by supporting Eastern Lebanon County education and athletic programs, local religious and other organizations, the Schaefferstown Historical Society, and places of cultural importance such as Colonial Williamsburg.
Energy Conservation
The installation of an electricity-saving Hershey Energy System in 2006 is just one of the aggressive measures taken by the company to minimize energy and resource consumption through increased efficiency and conservation. Another power-saving strategy was the recent replacement of old T12 fluorescent lighting fixtures by new, more efficient T5 fluorescent technology.
